How can recent graduates and junior creatives effectively build and present a competitive portfolio to increase their chances of securing jobs or gigs in a highly competitive market? In what ways can networking opportunities be improved for junior creatives to help them establish connections within the industry and discover job and business opportunities?
In my design project ”Flowlix”, I set out to create a comprehensive digital platform that caters to the needs of artists, photographers, and designers. My goal was to develop a space where creators can showcase their work, find inspiration, and network with peers. By addressing the limitations of existing platforms, I aimed to provide a solution that truly understands and meets the needs of creators.
The idea generation phase began with extensive brainstorming sessions using Mural, where I utilized digital post-it notes to capture and categorize ideas. This process included analyzing similar services, studying their features, and identifying gaps in the market. By immersing myself in the creative process, I generated a wide range of concepts that laid the groundwork for the design.
To gain deeper insights into the needs and preferences of creators, I conducted a survey using Google Forms. The survey targeted photographers, artists, and designers, asking about their current practices, how they showcase their work, and what they value in a digital platform. I shared the survey in three different Facebook groups dedicated to creators, receiving a total of 120 responses. This data was instrumental in shaping the project's direction.
The design phase began with creating low-fidelity sketches using paper and pencil. These sketches evolved into mid-fidelity versions in Adobe XD, which served as a basis for the high-fidelity prototype developed in Adobe XD. The prototype incorporated user interface elements and structural designs that reflected the insights gathered from the survey. Survey results also influenced the choice of brand colors, fonts, and logo design, creating a cohesive and visually appealing platform.
The development of Flowlix was a comprehensive journey that involved empathizing with users, defining clear design goals, generating innovative ideas, and rigorously testing prototypes. By engaging with the creator community and incorporating their feedback, I was able to design a multifunctional platform that addresses the diverse needs of artists, photographers, and designers. The final product is a sleek, user-friendly space that not only showcases their work but also fosters inspiration and networking opportunities.
